Traditional Choices for Mother of the Bride Dresses and Mother of the Groom Dresses.

When your daughter or son tells you that they have decided to get married, you share in their excitement of love and get down to the thrill of helping plan a wedding. And, then in dawns on you – I am the mother of the bride or I am the mother of the groom. I’ve got to have a special dress also. Where do you begin?

Here are some of the traditional things you do and don’t do:
First, ask the bride what colors she is planning for the bridesmaids and maid/matron of honor to wear. You will want something to blend with these colors but do not choose the same color. More importantly don’t wear white as this is reserved for the bride and don’t wear black as you definitely are not in mourning. After these considerations, choose a color that compliments your skin and hair color. You probably already know which colors do this.

If the couple is planning a formal wedding, then you will want a long dress. If not, a short length will be more appropriate. Think about the time of year and weather conditions to determine color, style, and fabric. Do you want a suit type dress? Short and long length suit dresses are very attractive and if the wedding is to take place in cold weather conditions you will have the advantage of wearing a long sleeve jacket. Two-piece, or mock 2-piece, dresses are another option in both short and long lengths. You can usually find a good selection of these dresses with both short and long sleeves. And, finally, a one-piece dress is always elegant and beautiful. You can find these dresses with an array of necklines, sleeve lengths, bodice and skirt types in several fabrics and colors.

The mother of the bride usually gets first choice of colors and then the mother of the groom will choose another color.

Tuxedos - Purchase or Rent? Have you noticed that on some websites you can purchase your own tuxedo for just about the price you would pay for two tuxedo rentals? So the next time you are in need of a tuxedo you might want to think about purchasing rather than renting. Go ahead and do your research so you’ll know what you want and be ready to take the plunge.

A complete tuxedo ensemble includes a jacket, trousers, shirt, bow tie, cuff links, studs, and a cummerbund or vest. If you wear a vest, you do not wear a cummerbund. I would suggest purchasing extra ties and cummerbunds in colors and patterns for a more festive look for any occasion.

Your classic tuxedo, of course, is black but you have several collar options from which to choose. You have the notch lapel tuxedo jacket, the peak lapel tuxedo jacket, the shawl lapel tuxedo jacket, and the mandarin color tuxedo jacket. Personally I prefer the classic notch lapel tuxedo jacket but it really is a matter of choice. The shawl lapel gives the body an elongated look so it has a slenderizing affect.

You then have the trousers in pleated and non-pleated with an adjustable or non-adjustable waist band, all with a satin stripe down the legs.

There is a great selection of tuxedo shirts available. You have the classic wing collar tuxedo shirt, regular collar tuxedo shirt, mandarin collar tuxedo shirt, banded mandarin collar tuxedo shirt, piped mandarin collar tuxedo shirt and the list goes on and on.

The accessories are endless. You have the band bow tie or one of the newer contemporary style ties, the cummerbund or button cover jewelry if you choose one of the mandarin collar shirts. And, of course, the studs and cuff links. Don’t forget to take a look at the tuxedo vests. All accessories will be available in an array of colors, patterns and styles. You’re sure to find what you need to complete your ensemble.

Bridesmaid Dresses to fit All Your Bridesmaids

So you’ve got bridesmaids of all different sizes and are finding it difficult to find a stylish bridesmaid dress that compliments each one. There’s several ways to make this less of a problem. Some brides will select the color for the bridesmaids’ dresses and then the bridesmaids can choose any appropriate style in that particular color. I’ve been to a wedding where the bride chose to handle the problem in this way and it was beautiful. Each bridesmaid selected a style that flattered her in the color selected by the bride and each one of them looked spectacular.

Another way to compliment the different sizes is to choose bridesmaid dress separates where you can purchase the top in one size and the skirt in another. This is very convenient for the bridesmaid who is not hour glass proportioned. I have seen bridesmaid separates in very up-to-date styles and colors. I have seen tops with the halter neckline, tops with spaghetti straps, sweetheart and scalloped necklines. The tops have either short sleeves, long sleeves and, I have seen some with the now popular bell sleeve. The top with the georgette bell sleeves was gorgeous. And, you can choose one of several style skirts to go with the top of your choice.

It is also very convenient when both regular sizes and plus sizes are offered in the same bridesmaid dress style. So many manufacturers are now offering the same contemporary styles in both size ranges. Finding plus size bridesmaid dresses is no longer a problem.

Holiday Formal Gowns

How do you select that perfect holiday formal gown? Soon your calendar will be filled with parties for the holidays. For some of those parties you are going to need a long formal gown. Every fabric takes dyes differently. So will scarlet satin be the same color as scarlet velvet? To get the color of your choice you will need to see the fabric from which the dress is made. What is the fabric of choice for a holiday party dress – satin, velvet, taffeta, jersey, chiffon, georgette? The type of fabric depends on the style of dress. Should you purchase a formal gown that is sleeveless or with long or short sleeves, boat neck or scoop neck, full skirt or straight skirt, or how about a slinky from top to bottom? There are so many important decisions to be made as you want to look your most ravishing in your holiday party formal.

Another question – if you need a plus size formal gown where will you find one with all the style and finesse that you want in your very special gown? And, even another question – if you are looking for a more modest formal gown, will you be able to locate one that is contemporary and stylish? After all, you want to be shining in your festive dress also.
